Report: Syracuse officials plan to implement statues of football greats in new practice facility

Syracuse plans to add statues of football legends Ernie Davis, Floyd Little and Jim Brown near its new indoor football practice facility, according to The Post-Standard.

Construction for the 102,258 square foot facility is scheduled to begin near the start of the fall semester. The estimated cost of the structure is $17 million, and the University hopes it will be completed before the 2014 preseason, according to The Post-Standard.

The bronze statues will be built in 44 Plaza, a room dedicated to Syracuse’s all-time greats, according to The Post-Standard.

Syracuse Athletic Director Daryl Gross told The Post-Standard last month that the project is “on track.”

The University has not announced whether it will move the Davis statue that sits near the Carrier Dome and at the outskirts of the Quad, or use a new statue.

Steve Schroeder, the assistant director for planning at Syracuse, informed a group of about 30 of the new additions on Tuesday, the Post-Standard reported.

In his speech, Schroeder addressed the importance of building the new facility in order to continue to enhance Syracuse’s image at the time of its move to the ACC.

He’ll do so again Wednesday night at a public meeting at the Goldstein Student Center on South Campus.
