SU Catholic Chaplain Father Linus DeSantis dies of heart attack
Father Linus DeSantis, the Catholic Chaplain of Syracuse University and SUNY-ESF, died of a heart attack on Tuesday night.
DeSantis had a heart attack Sunday evening. While he was in the hospital being treated, he suffered another heart attack on Tuesday night. He died around 10:45 p.m., according to an email sent to some members of the SU community from Maggie Byrne, a campus minister at SU’s Catholic Center.
“There is such great comfort in knowing what a faith-filled, selfless and loving man he was. There’s no doubt in my mind that he went home to be with Our Father,” Byrne said. “We all have a new intercessor praying for us.”
DeSantis was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1971. He started working at SU in November 2007, according to the Hendricks Chapel website.
Weekday Masses are cancelled until further notice, Byrne said. Mass on Sundays will continue for the rest of the semester, she added.
A wake will be held on Friday at the SU Catholic Center at 3 p.m. The funeral will be the following day at the Franciscan Church of the Assumption at 11 a.m.
