Despite losing her second match of the season on Sunday against Miami’s then-No. 6 Estela Perez-Somarriba, Gabriela Knutson moved up to No. 4 in the nation, the highest ranking ever for a Syracuse player. Both of Knutson’s losses on the season, Perez-Somarriba and Florida Atlantic’s Aliona Bolsova Zadoinov, are currently ranked top three in the nation.
Knutson opened the weekend with a quick victory against Florida State’s then-No. 24 Carla Touly. After taking the first set in straight sets, 6-0, Touly retired the match due to injury. On Sunday, the junior battled with Perez-Somarriba until she fell behind in the 10th game of both sets to lose, 4-6, 4-6. Knutson’s No. 4 ranking bests her No. 8 ranking on Mar. 20.
The doubles pairing of Knutson and Miranda Ramirez dropped one spot after two wins against opponents currently ranked in the top 80. No. 13 Knutson and Ramirez snuck past Florida State’s No. 63 Touly and Ariana Rahmanparast, 6-4. Two days later, the pairing beat Miami’s then-No. 66 Perez-Somarriba and Daniella Roldan, 6-3.
Syracuse dropped three spots from No. 25 to No. 28 after losing twice last weekend. After falling to then-No. 19 Florida State, 4-2, the Orange were swept 7-0 on Sunday by then-No. 18 Miami.
SU will return to action on Friday when it takes on No. 4 Duke at Drumlins Country Club.
