Shots fired outside Sheraton
UPDATED: May 5, 2012 5:40 a.m.
Shots were fired outside the Sheraton University and Hotel Conference Center early Saturday morning. Ten casings were recovered said a Syracuse Police Department officer at the scene.
As of 3:40 a.m., no suspects were detained, the officer said. Police vehicles blocked off University Avenue between Walnut Avenue and Marshall Street around 3:15 a.m. Pedestrians were also prohibited from walking on the sidewalk in front of the Sheraton.
It is unknown if anyone was injured.
Two crime scene vans, four Department of Public Safety vehicles and three Syracuse Police Department vehicles remained at the scene until after 4 a.m. Vehicles from the fire department were also initially present. SPD officers combed the area outside the Sheraton and also walked up and down Marshall Street and around the Martin J. Whitman School of Management Building.
Witnesses who were on Marshall Street at the time said they saw an unusually large group of people in the vicinity of Acropolis Pizza House before hearing the shots. Witnesses said it did not appear any Syracuse University students were involved. Sheraton employees said no one entered the building in connection to the shooting and the hotel remained safe during the early morning activity.
Before leaving the scene, SPD officers were seen questioning individuals outside the Whitman building. The Syracuse Police Department is expected to issue a statement sometime Saturday.
